Buried Secrets – Tips for Finding All Your Comments

I am of the opinion that many people don’t fully use the Windows Live “More” menu. Several of the options on it appear to reproduce the functions available on the left hand side of your Profile page as shown below. This may cause some to conclude they are the same. The truth is, these are quite different.

Here is a simple guide to finding all the comments, notes, guestbook entries, file comments, shared favorite comments and the like. And this will all be pretty much in the same place. Just follow the pictures.

First, from anywhere in Windows Live you can access the “More” menu:

    image

You’ve probably been here before to get to your calendar or to any groups you belong to. Groups is the middle selection above. If you haven’t noticed, it’s now enhanced with group updates. Any group you belong to will show its updates (from others) on the page from “More>Groups” and allow you to go to your group. It’s a very handy addition to Windows Live.

The other two options open summary pages for either SkyDrive or Spaces. SkyDrive is where your photos, shared files and shared favorites live. Your synced personal (private) favorites are also located here. And Spaces is where your customized page is which can include your blog – or your blog can be on its own page.

The thing is, all these things can have comments. And keeping track of these comments can be difficult if you don’t know where to look. Many people spend a lot of time jumping around from one area to another to find new their comments, and some invariably get lost or go unnoticed.

So, click on “SkyDrive” from the menu shown above. A page like the one below will open:

    image

This page tells you about recent activities on your SkyDrive as well as the activities of all the other SkyDrives on your network. Let’s now click on “Recent comments” to open the page shown below:

    image

Here you’ll see a summary of comments on all the files stored in your SkyDrive. I sometimes upload a pdf of a web page or some other document here. This allows others to read it and comment on it almost like it was in a blog by itself. But these comments can be overlooked if you’re not careful. Also note the “View:File comments” link above. We’ll come back to this shortly.

Had you clicked on “Spaces” instead of “SkyDrive” you would see a page similar to this one:

    image

And it has a “Recent comments” too. If you click on it, then a page like the one below opens:

    image

And this page gives comments from each of your blogs and your Guestbook. But the real trick is clicking that link I pointed out before. Clicking the link for “View:Spaces comments” or “View:Files comments” opens a menu.

This menu is comment central. From here you can select which comments you want to see. You can jump back and forth without having to drill down the menus to get to this page. This is a direct access link to each areas comments pages.

    Here is the menu:

    image

From here you can select any of these four options, and the comments you’ll see will be specific to this area of the application. In each section, if there are more comments than room to display them then a direct link to where all the comments are is provided. If you select the “All comments and notes” then you get just that. Everything that was recently commented on appears on this page in chronological order of the most recently commented on items and their comments also in chronological order. You can select the link again to change to a different area to filter the comments. Very handy!

So, now you can find all your comments no matter where they’re buried!

Lol. Yes, my first. So it isn't "high quality".

You published a video! Well, I'll be...I can go right off people sometimes;-)

    Jeremyescribió:
@Jeffrey: Lol. :D I like to see all comments, and since I am usually on Home and that means I only have to load one page (also I have a slow connection) so my way is better for me. Everyone has their opinion. :-)

@Jen: Writer worked when I published my video...hmm

Great, post! Thanks for sharing. I don't think a lot of people know about all these different types of comments and how to view and manage them, so this is very helpful.

Aaarrrgh - now he tells me! (Live is acting strange!) Is that why Live Writer is giving me the runaround tonight? Keep getting some server error. Bullied and bullied it into publishing and got it done in the end!

@Jen: That's a good point. I have my feeds already set up but never use them... Me bad! Something weird is happening. Live is acting strange.

    Jeffreyescribió:
Doh! Can't believe you're gonna make me count clicks again! Didn't I do this enough for the calendar complaint!! LOL!

    Your way:
Home>Do more>recent comments = two clicks (if you're already on Home (I never am) and you want All comments(I almost always want Spaces comments)) <---Best case
Some non-Home page in Live>Home>Do more>recent comments = three clicks (if you want All comments(I almost always want Spaces comments))
Some non-Home page in Live>Home>Do more>recent comments>Spaces comments = four clicks (This would be typical for me)

    My way:
Any page in Live>More>Spaces or Skydrive>Recent comments = three clicks (This is typical for me)
    Any page in Live>More>Spaces or Skydrive>Recent comments>All comments = 4 clicks

We're so funny! But don't get me wrong. They're both good as it gets. Which one you use to save a click depends on what you want. But typically, FOR ME at least, it'll be three or four clicks for something that should be less as Mandy suggests - like one click. Also - if it's a fairly recent comment I don't need to go to the Recent comments page. It'll be right there on the summary at the top. Minus one from my counts... LOL! Are we winning prizes or p!$$ing into the wind?

Also, don't forget that if you run RSS feeds, you can call up all your comments from within Live Mail on the Desktop. That's nice. I've got over 800 items there. Always did like that feature;-)

    Jeremyescribió:
Well I'm always going to my home page so it is easier for me.

My way: Start from blank page > Home Page > Open "Do More" menu and select "Recent Comments" > Comment Page (shows all comments & notes).

Your Way: Start from blank page > Any WL page > Open "More" menu and select "Spaces" or "SkyDrive" > Recent Comments page (only shows Skydrive or Spaces comments) > Open "View: [...]" menu and select "All comments and notes" > Recent Comments page (shows all comments and notes).

    Which way is faster? :P
    25 Mar
    Jeffreyescribió:
@Jeremy:Forgot about that one. Is it quicker? I'm getting about 3 of one and a quarter of a dozen the other. Guess it depends on where you start. Good point though. Thanks for pointing it out. Wonder if there are more???
    25 Mar
    Jeremyescribió:
You can also get to it quicker by using the "Do More" menu on the right side of your homepage.

Last year, maybe as a precursor to the big changes, if you entered spaces via messenger (which was how I always did) on your home page, on the right hand side about where the MSN entertainment thing is now, there was a list of recent comments. The first few lines of the comment and where it was made. in chronological order. You could see at a glance (no clicking at all) if you had any comments.
So in a way yes to your suggestion about filtering, the news feed, on a separate page, but only for comments made on your own space (photo, blog or guest book!)(and we do have a spare page, that is superfluous, ie: the page you log on to via messenger)
    25 Mar
    Jeffreyescribió:
@Mandy: Oh, I guess we would have to also filter that list for just updates to your account too. Well, I'm just happy I don't have to jump around to the blog summary page, then the notes page, then just try to find a comment on a picture... So, I'm happy with what we have. I know you aren't happy with it, but I'm OK with it. Maybe they can add this kind of a view in the next phase. ???
    25 Mar
    Jeffreyescribió:
@Mandy: I don't recall what we had before. When I first started using Spaces there were only comments from Spaces, as far as I recall, but... Anyway, is your scheme something like if you could take your "What's new with your network" on the Home page and filter it for just comments? Would that be closer to what you want? I know this is a lot of clicking - hence the "Buried" in the title. But so far as I know, this is all we have at the moment.
    25 Mar
    Just Mandyescribió:
That's an awful lot of clicking and you can still miss comments because of the order they are put in, it would be so much easier, if MSN just sorted this area out! It really lets down the spaces "experience" Having comments put in chronological order, regardless of where they were made, and saying where the comment was, would be SOooo much better! Much like they had before the changes, when it was listed at the side of your homepage (or profile page, I forget which now!)
